Bondage is the art of restraining a consensual partner for erotic or aesthetic reasons; it is about forming a bond of trust between the Dominant (the one who will do the tying) and the Submissive (the one being tied up). Though many who are not familiar with it link it to emotional, physical and sexual abuse, nothing could be further from the truth - only a bad dominant would hurt their submissive without consent or make them panic, and will often be ostracized from the community.
What bondage is depends entirely on the couple; some many like it soft and others might prefer it a bit rough.
